Insurance: Michael Mills Construction, Inc., is fully bonded and insured, carrying $1,000,000 public liability coverage and workers compensation insurance through State Fund. MMC Inc also requires subcontractors to be licensed in their specialty and carry appropriate insurance.
Michael Mills got into the construction business when he built his own home, a double geodesic dome, in Aptos in 1976. Following completion of his house, he built several homes in the area, and remodeled many others. Over the years he has added talented and dedicated people to his staff in an effort to bring top quality results to his clients. Michael is a Certified GreenBuilding Professional. He is very active in NARI as a chapter officer and a member of the National Board of directors.
Opal McAllister, Michael's wife, has long been the administrative backbone of the organization. She keeps the "financials" straight and keeps the company on a solid footing. She is an avid learner, and has taken classes in Construction Management and Estimating, Financial Management, Personnel Management, Computer Technology, etc.
Ken McLemore, Vice President of Operations, is Opal's son and represents the next generation of this family-owned company. He worked with Michael on their first house, a geodesic dome. He then joined the Carpenter's Union out of Vallejo, Ca. He worked on both custom homes and tract homes, eventually becoming Customer Service Representative for a major homebuilder in the Sacramento area. After returning to the San Jose area he worked extensively in commercial and residential remodeling, serving as foreman. He re-joined Michael A. F. Mills Construction in early 1994 as a Carpenter. When the company incorporated in 2002, he was appointed to his present position, and is now in full charge of all production. Ken is a NARI Certified Lead Carpenter, and has his General Contractors License as well. He has also taken classes in many aspects of Construction Technology and Management.
Johna McLemore is Opal’s daughter. She is known by family and school friends as Jana, but she has been called by her nickname the majority of years. She recently returned to Santa Cruz after several years in the Sacramento area. While in Sac she worked for 9 years at Sprint Communications in customer service, and 4 years at Papé Material Handling/Bobcat West where she helped keep the office humming. Prior to that she worked as a Cosmetology Instructor and Cosmetologist. In addition to answering calls and general office operations, she is now in charge of our Human Relations program and helps us with Advertising and Sales Promotion.
Otis Coen, Estimator, first joined us in 2001. Since that time he has looked at hundreds of potential jobs and discussed them with their homeowners. He works closely with Ken and Michael in looking at project feasibility and design considerations and in calculating what it will take to accomplish each potential project. Away from work Otis is also a very talented composer and keyboardist. While he no longer travels with his band, they still do local appearances and recently recorded a CD.
Ernesto Lavenant, Certified Lead Carpenter, has been part of our team since 2000. He has been a Carpenter for 19 years, and had his own cabinet shop for 5 years. He is known for his careful detailing and his dedication to customer satisfaction. He is the devoted husband of Adelita and father of David (4) and Daniel (born in 2005), and a minister in his church. He also loves gardening.
Julio Acosta, Lead Carpenter, joined us in 2001. He has 14 years of carpentry experience, 13 here in the Santa Cruz area. He has a wide set of skills, ranging from rough carpentry to tile and drywall finishing. He, too, is popular with clients and known for happy customers. He and his wife have seven children at home. When he isn't working or involved with his family, he enjoys learning the guitar. We suspect he doesn't get much time to practice.
Eligio Hernandez: Eligio is a well rounded carpenter and very knowledgeable in cement, concrete, forms & foundations.
John Mullen: John joins us each morning from San Juan Bautista! He has a drywall background and is also our tape and texture artist. John is very detail oriented; he has been an excellent learner.
